Project Introduction

This highway upgrading project on the A1 national highway is divided into three sub-sections for  a total length of about 22 km:

a) Firenze North – Scandicci junction (Lots 0-2-3) (from km 279+000 to km 287+200)

b) Scandicci junction – Certosa junction (Lots 4-5-6) (from km 287+200 to km 291+887)

c) Certosa junction – Firenze South (Lots 7-8 ) (from km 291+887 to km 300+749)

Section a) includes design and works supervision activities in a highly dense urban area. This section is also relevant for impact on traffic flow, for the economic importance of the surrounding urban area and for the existence of buildings on one side of the highway . In this lot, a new bridge over Arno River was built (10 spans – 340 m long). Section b) is the most significant from an environmental point of view: this part of the project focused on interventions to ease traffic flow along the south carriageway, introduced to remedy the unfeasible widening of galleries. In this lot there are 4 new tunnels: Melarancio (1,1 km), Poggio Secco (1,2 km), Le Romite (0,3 km) e Del Colle (0,66 km). Section c)  includes an asymmetric widening which allows to divide the project in several phases, in order to ensure continuous traffic flow. This lot also includes a new tunnel: Pozzolatico (2,4 km).

The design activity included all the lots. Work Supervision for the lots 0-2-3 finished in 2012. Work Supervision for lots 4-5-6-7-8 is still on going in 2013.
