Roadroid, innovative system for measuring IRI through smartphones

January, 2015 Montenegro

SPEA has recently tested in Montenegro a new device for IRI (International Roughness Index) data collection named Roadroid (www.roadroid.se – Lars Forslöf: Innovator and Owner). It runs as follows:

  • The dynamic data are collected by a smartphone on which the Roadroid application is installed, using a combination of GPS sensor, WiFi/3G connection and built-in accelerometers.
  • Once data have been collected on the field they are sent to the Roadroid Developer for post-processing to obtain final IRI outputs.

Roadroaid is also able to collect many other information during the inspection surveys (rutting depth, potholes, furniture, etc.) classifying each of them with a certain status (e.g. good, fair, poor). Another specific RMS (Road Management System) app is currently being tested on the field for this specific purpose.

In addition, thanks to the Smartphone GPS sensor, SPEA staff has been able to collect geo-tagged data like average speed, altitude and GPS pictures.

In this way a complete and reliable road database has been created in less than five working days, covering almost 50% of the whole road network of Montenegro (main and regional roads), despite of the difficult conditions of the roads during the winter season.

These data are now available also for further desk analysis and for an effective stakeholder communication through GIS tools and Google Earth.
